Ha! and Sewing Things

It thought it could defeat me. I showed it! I fixed the sleeves on the robe yesterday. Now it fits perfectly. Just in time for summer to be over. No, there will be no pics.

Now, about sewing. I am very good at sewing my knitting together. I have had Fair judges come looking for me to meet me and find out how I seam things because the work was so beautiful. It's really a matter of practice.

In the early days of my knitting years, I didn't do top down seamless sweaters cuz I had no access to such a thing. (This is, truly, what is best about the internet. Having access to so much information) Most of my knitting years I was isolated and had only learned what I could find in books that I found at the library or magazines. Most patterns were knit flat, in pieces, and needed to be sewn together, just like regular sewing does.

Oddly, I do not mind sewing my knitted things together. I kind of take pride in it, seeking to make the best seams I can. I did not find out about seamless knitting until the early 2000's when I bought my shop. Wow, I learned so much those years, just from the inventory it came with.

When I was putting that baby cardigan together last week, I edjumucated myself some more. I did some research to find the best way to sew the sleeves. I have always back stitched seams that are not vertical or horizontal, but are diagonal. However, back stitch makes for a heavy seam allowance and can be quite sloppy. Especially in a little baby jacket made of worsted weight yarn. I decided I needed to see if there's a better way.

I ended up mattress stitching it, which is quite a challenge because there are increases to deal with, so the seam isn't invisible. But the seam allowance is much thinner, which is a big plus to me. It doesn't look too bad. Not any worse than back stitching. (Ignore the cat hair. It's that time of year again.)

I was hoping for something more elegant, but oh well. Anyway, as I was googling around, I found a seaming technique called the Bickford Method. I'd never heard of it before, but it is a life changing revelation to me.

It's not seamless looking, but you have no seam allowance, and it looks very nice. I shall be using it in the future, though it didn't work on the cardigan sleeves because of the stitch pattern, which has garter stitch rows in it.

Now, not to be outdone, google provided me with yet something else new and wonderful. I was looking for ways to sew in set in sleeves because, again, I have always back stitched them in. I found a video of a method that involves a sort of half mattress stitch, half grafting method. I tried and it works very well.

It produced the best seaming of a set in sleeve I've ever done. I am so excited.

All in all, I call it a good week. I learned new ways to improve my knitting skills. I share this info with you so you can improve your knitting skills too.

I've said this before, and I'm saying it again. I've been knitting for more than 50 years, and I still learn new exciting things about it.

How It's Made

I ran across this video of how Red Heart yarn is made earlier this week and thought I'd share it. It's fascinating.

I don't really care for Red Heart yarns and rarely if ever buy any, but I find myself using them quite a bit because of all the charity knitting I do. We, who are in Knit Wits, don't complain about our yarn donations. We just use them.

I have been knitting this past week. Pics to come later. I've started the main fairisle section of the Octopus sweater. Aside from a couple pairs of socks, I haven't done any fairisle knitting by hand in years. I felt the need to re-educate myself on the subject before I got going on the sweater. I dug out some of my books on the subject and read them, and I watched a few Youtube videos on how to weave the longer floats as you go (found out I've been doing it wrong all these years). When I felt suitably educated, I started knitting. I am liking the results and having a ball. Why have I not done fairisle for so long? I'd forgotten how much fun it is.

I also finished knitting the baby sweater for Knit Wits. I need to block it before I take the pics. Should get that done today.

I even worked on the silver shrug I started before the vacation. Unbelievably, on Friday I was able to sit out on the deck in the sunshine and knit for the first time this year! It was 46F degrees and no breeze. Despite the snow still piled in places on the deck, I actually got hot sitting in the sun. And boy, did I enjoy it! Best day of the week!

Yesterday it was grey and rainy most of the day. I didn't do much of anything. I was super tired. I'm talking to-the-bone tired. Don't know where it came from. Maybe because I've been running busy since returning home. So I was pretty lazy most of the day watching movies on Netflix with the hubby. (We subscribed to Netflix the week before our vacation). I did some beading in the late afternoon though. My conscience was too guilty about doing nothing creative, so I gave in to it. I started an odd-count peyote bitty bead project. It's this months challenge in the Yahoo Seadbeadersters group. More about it later.

I hope you enjoy the video. The sun is shining again today. It's only 39 at the moment. I'm hoping it'll get above 40. If it does, I'm out in the sun knitting! Keeping my fingers crossed.

A Bit of Knitting

I cast this on yesterday and bound it off about 10 minutes ago. It's almost 10:30 pm and I haven't done my blog post yet. Yikes! So I've grabbed my camera off the table beside me and taken these pics.

Technically, it's still a work in progress cuz I have to make the second one. But, ain't it cute?

It will be a birthday present for someone special.

Does everyone know we have only 37 days until Christmas? A friend showed me this video this morning and it is so cute and timely. My fellow knitters, and the folks we knit for, will all be able to relate.

I Banished the White Stripe

Remember this?

It looks like this now.

I am awesome. That is all there is to it.

What did I do? I frogged back to where the white begins and cut the yarn there. Then I cut the other end of the white part off the main ball. So that removed the white-which I gave to Judy since she seemed to form an instant emotional attachment to it when she heard I was taking it out.

I have a small ball of yarn that I had to more or less 'throw away' when figuring out where to cast on the second sock in the colorway pattern so it will match the first (I kept it just in case I would need it at the end of the toe. Remember, I'm not quite sure I have enough yarn for the whole sock). There was some pinky/purple in the ball, but not quite enough of it, so I pulled a bit of the other end of the main ball of yarn until I found that funky pinky purple. Thankfully, it was just a couple feet in. I cut enough of that pinky part so when combined with the first piece of pinky purple it would give me the same length as the white piece I cut out plus a few inches for joining. Then I Russian Joined everything together and voila! It's fixed.

Have you seen a more perfect match of stripes between two sock legs in all your life?

No applause please. You'll make me blush. I'm ready to start the heel flap now. Hurray!

I've started working on the shrug I started last month for Knitwits. I worked on it Tuesday at the Rathdrum KAL group meeting because my brain was so distracted I didn't think I could handle anything more complicated. I managed to get a few inches done.

The green knitting bag I'm carrying it around in is a knit felted little number I made a few years ago.

It's the pattern My Constant Companion by Janet Scanlon. I love the pattern so much I've made 3 of them - 2 of which I kept for me. You should check out her patterns. She has quite a talent for felted bag/purse designing.

I had my class this morning and actually had a student. She had a whole list of questions about how to do this and that and the other thing. I taught her all the answers and she went away feeling learned (and like she'd got her money's worth). I call that a successful class.

Speaking of class, I found this wonderful tutorial for a really easy way to do a Provisional Cast On. I don't know why I didn't think of doing it this way myself. It's so simple.

Have a good day.

So Much for That Idea

Even though I haven't blogged for a few days, I have been working on the blog. Obviously, it turned out to be a waste of time. Several months ago I got an invite from Paypal to test out their new Storefront Widget, which was (and still is) in beta. I started setting it up, then got distracted and forgot about it. Then this last week I remembered it and decided to finish the set up.

That's what I've been doing. Trying to set up that damn widget. I ended up deleting it because it has so many problems. Enough bugs to fill an ant hill. I sent tech support an email and found out they aren't supporting it, working on it, or have any plans to fix the bugs at this time. It's a sad shame too because it was a really cool little widget and a lot of people would want to use it if it were working properly.

So now I'm in a fix. I wanna do a little store linked to this here blog to sell some of the beaded jewelry I've made because, well, the drawer can only hold so much, and I can only wear so much. I have quite a few pieces I don't even wear. I just made them because it was an interesting project. I looked for other store front widgets but there is no such thing. If I wanna sell my jewelry it's gonna take some major programming work on my part. Fun fun (not). I will be weighing my options to figure out the best way to go about it over the next couple week.

In the meantime, I didn't get my Nook case done because I spent so much time on the widget-that-doesn't-work. I got it about half done. I got some more done on the shrug and the navy sweater, and I made another Ndebele Wave bracelet, which I'll take pics of and post later this week.

Oh, one more thing. I had the Ravelry Knitalong meeting today. The attendees wanted to make it a weekly meeting because twice a month is not satisfying enough. They're having that much fun! So we are now meeting every Tuesday, 1 to 3pm, at the Rathdrum Library. In some ways I'm thrilled. But in other ways I'm a little dismayed because I've been thinking about starting a beading group and I had toyed with meeting on the Tuesdays that Rathdrum KAL wasn't meeting on. I can't spend all my time shuttling from meeting to meeting all week. So now I don't know what to do. I still want a beading group in the worst way. I need to be around other beaders. Another item to put on my examination/weighing my options list.

In the meantime, here is a fantastic knitting video for your amusement.

Have a great day.

Simple Woman's Daybook for February 2, 2010

FOR TODAY
February 2, 2101

Outside my window...
Dripping wet and gray. No snow, just rain. The tractor is the brightest thing out there with it's green paint job and bright yellow trim.

I am thinking...
I need to get busy in the kitchen soon.

I am thankful for...
scotch tape. It really is a remarkable invention if you think about it.

From the kitchen...
I'm baking a cake today. It's my turn to take dessert to the Knitwits meeting. It's also my birthday week, so I'm going to make my favorite-Velvet Spice with cream cheese frosting.

I am wearing...
blue jeans and a purple top.

I am creating...
the second bamboo sock. I'm well into the leg now.

I am going...
to Rathdrum Knitalong this afternoon. It will be interesting to see how the sock knitters are doing.

I am reading...
old beading magazines of late. I'm looking for a ring pattern. I can see it in my mind, but I can't remember what issue it's in.

I am hoping...
to finish the baby cardigan today. I'm taking it with me to the Knitalong meeting to work on it. All I have to do is sew in the sleeves and the side seams, oh, and put on some buttons. I need to dig in the button box and find something appropriate.

I am hearing...
Sigmund Freud trying to tell Data what his nightmares mean. He's failing miserably. Yes, I've got Star Trek The Next Generation on. Syfy is having a marathon today. Woot!

Around the house...
there is a marked decrease in the number of boxes stacked around here. Ruth is making good progress unpacking.

One of my favorite things...
When all the fur kids are asleep. They are all quietly snoozing right now. Chenille is curled up on my lap. She looks so sweet and innocent when she's sleeping.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Lets see, tomorrow is Knitwits, then my knitting class on Thursday. I'm going to finish that baby cardigan for certain. I also want to get back to work on the Mystery Shawl. I've decided to frog it and redo it with darker colored beads. It's become quite evident that the beads need to show up in the design.

Here is a picture for thought I am sharing...
BAZINGA!!!

Extreme Knitting

I am going on our first camping trip of the summer, so I will not be blogging for a few days. I will leave you with this wonderful knitting video of a lady who knit over 1000 strands together, making a mattress of sorts. It's quite.....entertaining. Art, for arts sake.

Have a great weekend.

The Proclaimers

Don't have much to say today. I love the internet. I found this wonderful video of one of my most favorite songs on Youtube. There is no way I can stay mad, sad, or miserable when listening to this song.

Yes, they are twin brothers.

Have a great day!

A Knitting Video

I don't know what to write about today. I just know I want to write, or something, anything, to keep my mind off the knowledge that I have an appointment at 3:30 with a surgeon. I can't knit when I'm this nervous. I may bead for awhile when I get done here. That calms me down some.

I can't help but reflect on this change in my life. What change you ask? I was raised in an extremist religious cult. My parents joined it when I was a baby. One of the things that was a no no was going to the doctor. The main reason was because going to a doctor for help with a health problem was viewed as a lack in faith in God. We couldn't even take an aspirin for a headache. We were supposed to depend on God healing us instead. We were taught that the medical profession was a great Satanic conspiracy to lure man away from faith in God. I look back on it now and think "How pathetic".

When I was 9 years old I fell out of a tree and broke my back. My parents did not take me to the hospital. They called the minister instead, who came over and prayed over me. I was paralyzed from the neck down for several hours. Being a parent now, I can't imagine how my parents could have done this? (Especially when they didn't hesitate to take my sister to the hospital when she broke her arm.) After the minister left, feeling came back to my limbs and whatnot. My parents saw it as a miracle from God. To be honest, my body was just doing what it does naturally. Healing itself. The break was not in a spot that would bring about permanent paralysis. I was a very lucky kid, and I know it. However, I've always had severe problems with my back because of that fall.

This is how I was raised though. To hate and fear the medical profession. It took some doing to get over that after we left the cult when I was 36 years old. I don't understand that kind of thinking, either, even though I thought that way myself. Does it never occur to these people that maybe God gave the medical knowledge to man to help heal us? It doesn't. I can speak from experience. I'm glad I don't fear and hate doctors anymore. If not for them, and medicine, I'd be in terrible condition.

I got a wonderful phone call yesterday. One of the folks who reads this here blog contacted Mary Martin about her Mortimer Moose pattern and said such nice things Mary just had to call me to say thanks. (She even checked out my blog and said it was beautiful and wants her son to see it so he can get ideas for her web site. I thought that was so sweet.) She's sending me her newest patterns-which will be appearing in the next Patternworks catalog.

For those who don't know, Mary Martin designs the cutest knit felted stuffed toy patterns. She also does wonderful Christmas stockings as well as other nice designs. Check her web site for more info.

Some time ago my daughter sent me this video. Thought I'd leave it with y'all today. It's pretty cute, and illustrates what can happen with the knitting addiction if you don't watch out.

I'm in the mood to make a Christmas ornament cover. So I'm gonna go dig out some beads.

Have a great day.

The Thirsty Moose starring Miss Molly

We've been wondering why our sprinkler heads have been breaking lately. We aren't mowing them, walking on them, or hitting them with pickaxes (did that once-accidentally). We were starting to think that maybe they were just plain wearing out, until last Saturday evening. The mystery has been solved!

Hubby took a video of a very thirsty Miss Molly. I wanted to post it Sunday morning, but it took a little while for me to learn how all this video stuff works. Then it took all day for me to get it to upload onto the blog. It's not the best of quality because the camera doesn't like taking evening pics. It's one of those tiny Canon digital cameras. Besides, we're amateurs. There is no sound cos we didn't want you to hear our conversation whilst watching Miss Molly. I can't believe she puts her whole mouth over the sprinkler head. The water pressure coming out of there has got to hurt!

We now know Miss Molly comes by every other evening for a drink. I should say night, because after we took this video, we changed the sprinkler timer so she'd have to come later at night, after the dogs have gone to bed. (The barking was getting unbearable.)

Last Monday morning sweet hubby woke me up to tell me that Nubs and Antlers were out front. I got up to see. They were munching on choke cherry trees along the side of the driveway. While they were hard at it, the doe with twin fawns wandered into the driveway. So now we had 2 moose and 3 deer standing in our driveway discussing the merits of nutrition in choke cherries. Hubby was worried he wasn't gonna be able to get to work on time cos they were blocking his way. Antlers was greatly intrigued by the twins and kept trying to follow them around in circles. So Doe with twins went on their merry way. Then Nubs and Antlers decided to create a traffic jam. They slo-o-o-o-o-owly wandered into the street where they caused a great deal of brake screeching, then nimbly hopped over the fence on the other side of the street and went on their merry way. About 5 minutes later ANOTHER doe with a fawn showed up in the driveway to munch a bit. She was just passing through so she took her fawn and went on her merry way. Sweet Hubby went on his merry way while he could.

About 20 minutes later, along comes Miss Molly. Our driveway was like grand central station!

I am making good progress on the knitting. I finished the right front and I'm halfway through the left front of the baby aran cardigan. I've got 7 inches done on the back of the swimsuit cover up. The third clue for the mystery sock was posted yesterday, so I can continue that project too. However, I have some beading obligations to deal with. I have no 'project' figured out yet for next months tubular peyote class. I need to whip something up that's easy and fairly quick so Gayle can take a photo for the newsletter. Arrrgh....I really have no idea what to do on this one. Pattern in it? Or just a plain ol' tube. Plain would be easiest, and it is only a 2 hour class. Hmmm......

Speaking of classes, I had the second session of the cabochon class last night. Didn't go quite as well as last weeks session, but it was fine. I had one student who was having a really hard time with doing the basic edging. I think, perhaps, it was a sight problem. She was using dark beads and was having a hard time finding the holes with her needle. I felt really bad for her cos she didn't finish the project. But I've made arrangements to meet her next week for a personal lesson. The other 3 finished their cabs, and were quite pleased with them. I finished mine too (I made one right along with them). Daughter Ruth helped choose the color of beads I used. I have to say, she's got good color sense. I really like how it turned out. I'll post a pic later.

Let me know what you think of my little video.

Have a nice day.
