Hoping for Some Cat Love

Cashmere and Merino seem to be adapting to Ruth being away at college. They're doing much better than I thought they would seeing as how she was their favorite person in the house. They just barely tolerated me. For the first couple days the boys wandered around the house yowling loudly and looking for her. Then they got over it and went back to their normal selves and are having second thoughts about me. I'm helping that idea along with frequent offers of treats. They are all spending a LOT more time in my lap. I can't sit down without someone wanting to be on me.

At one point, Merino and Cashmere started to fight over me-in my lap. I put an end to that right away and did it without losing a single drop of blood. I know they don't actually care about me yet. They just want a warm spot to lie down and their favorite human is not available. But I like to pretend. Who knows, we might actually develop a relationship. In the meantime, Chenille, who does love me, is not happy having to share me now. She'll get over it.

Cashmere in my lap bagging z's.

When they can't be in my lap, they lay on the back of my chair half on my head. Sometimes Merino lays there batting me in the head because he wants his chin scratched. His butt half is heavy. My neck starts to ache if I don't push him off.

On Wednesday I took my car in to an auto body shop for an estimate on repairing some damage. Last winter (or was it the winter before?) my car slid into the mailbox when I was creeping up to it on the ice. The ice was a mound and the front tire just slid sideways right off of it. The result was 2 little dents where the front bottom corners of the mailbox contacted and a nice long scratch as I tried to move the car away. It's never bothered me, so I wasn't planning on getting it fixed. I saw it as a way to tell my dark gray Toyota Camry apart from the thousands of other dark gray Toyota Camry's around here. (It was the only dark gray Camry on the lot when we bought it. Thought it was unique. I didn't realize it was actually the last dark gray Camry and all the others had already been sold.) However, Sweet Hubby has been on my case to get it fixed lately, so I am. The estimate was lower than I expected, so I've made an appointment for the repairs. The closest appointment I could get was February 25th. Must be a lot of folks hitting their mailboxes this winter.

I had a couple Sears repair guys in on Friday to look at my stove. It's a ceramic top stove, and I love it. Doug and the kids gave it to me as a Mothers Day present several years ago when I still had my yarn shop. One of the front burners will only run on high. Off or high is all it will do. Nothing in between. Makes it hard to cook things, and it's the burner I like to use the most because it's a double burner. A large one with a smaller one inside. The guys figured out what is wrong and will be back on Monday with the new parts to install them. I'm looking forward to it.

While they were here, I also had them look at my dishwasher. Ever since the pump was replaced a couple years ago, it's never worked quite right. I get gunk buildup way faster than I used to. I find myself having to clean it out at least once a month, and the odor! Ugh! Turns out it's not my dishwasher that is the problem. It's the dish washing soap. The formula was changed in all dishwasher soap to eliminate a chemical that was bad for the environment, which I'm all for because we need to stop polluting the planet, but what do I do about the gunk? They recommended a product called Affresh, which is a cleaner that is supposed to clean gunk build up. It comes in tablet form. I shall acquire some later this week. They also recommended a different brand of dishwasher soap that they say works better than the one I've got called Finish because it has a rinse agent in it that helps decrease the gunk build up. I use the Costco Kirkland brand. I guess I'll try their suggestion and see if I like it.

Well, a cat wants my lap so I guess I'll sign off.

Layette #6 for Knitwits

First Knitwits FO of the year, Layette #6.

We'll start with the blanket, though it wasn't the first item in the set I completed.

Pattern: Shell stitch Crochet edging.

Yarn: Caron One Pound
Content: 100% Acrylic, worsted weight
Color: Ocean

Hook: Size G

Started: January 20, 2016
Finished: January 21, 2016

Comments: I love the print on this fabric.

Next, we have the jacket.

PatternSuper Natural Stripes by Fawn Pea
Size: 0-6 months

Yarn: Caron One Pound
Content: 100% Acrylic, worsted weight
Color: Ocean

Yarn: Unknown acrylic yarn
Content: 100% Acrylic, light worsted weight
Color: Lime

Yarn: Red Heart Classic
Content: 100% Acrylic, worsted weight
Color: Capri Blue

Needles: Circular size 5 and 7

Started: December 31, 2015
Finished: January 14, 2016

Comments: I really like these colors together. The Lime was just a little thinner than the Ocean so it came out a little bit smaller than usual, but it's still plenty big enough to fit a newborn. I also was a little short on Lime, so I did Ocean for the bottom welt, cuffs, and button/neck bands instead of using the Lime like the pattern instructed. I like it this way. Found the perfect froggy button for it too.

The front.

Back

Now the hat.

Comments: I just did the one stripe of Lime in this one.

Booties for the feet.

Yarn: Unknown acrylic yarn
Content: 100% Acrylic, light worsted weight
Color: Lime

Needles:  Circular size 5

Started: January 16, 2016
Finished: January 23, 2016

Comments: There is something not quite right about the garter cuffs on these, but I'm not sure what it is. Not gonna worry about it. I did the EZ Sewn Bind Off  and I like it much better. Much stretchier and looks great. For the ties, I just made cord with Lime yarn.

I've already started the next set. This one will be black, lemon yellow, and gray.

We are just chilling for the weekend, working on home projects interspersed with watching things on Netflix. It's nice to not need to go or be anywhere. It was cold outside today, and snowed just a bit while I was out there doing some hot tub maintenance.  I was being reminded that it's still winter.

Wow! Beading!

Nothing truly exciting. Just some simple jewelry to go with new Ellowyne Wilde doll outfits I've made for my Etsy shop. It felt good to be working with some beads though.

Red glass pearls and gold beads (Not real gold. Just gold in color.) I love the clasp! It's called a button clasp. It's a snap is what it is. Very easy to put on a dolls tiny little neck.

Goes with this outfit. I'm sure you've seen the sweater and hat before.

Then there's some pink and red crystals with white seed beads.

It's for this outfit.

And finally we have red crystals and silver beads.

This is the outfit for them.

I posted these three outfits in my Etsy store last night. Hopefully they will sell.

So now you know what I've been up to the last few days. I've busily been getting these outfits finished and photographed for Etsy. I actually got them up in time for Valentines sales. Woo hoo!

Time to start on the next batch.

Ruth came home on the weekend to finish packing up the things she was taking to college. On Sunday we packed it all in the pickup truck, and her car, and hauled it down to Moscow, Idaho. It rained like crazy. Poured. I swear, mother nature was trying to drown us. We covered the contents in the truck with a large tarp, which turned out to be of crap quality and was coming apart as we went down the highway. Ruth, who was driving behind us, said bits of tarp flew off all the way down. But we made it alright and the stuff that really needed to stay dry was dry. At least it wasn't snowing and icy!

I sewed on size 8 Japanese seed beads in metallic brown for the eyes. These will be a gift for my hair dresser.

I finished knitting the lime and teal baby jacket for Layette 6 today and started the hat while at Yarnies.

Had 3 turkeys in the front yard enjoying the Parkarosa Bird Buffet this morning. They would not let me take their picture with my camera. I did snap one with my phone but it was several feet from the window through the lower half where the screen is and it turned out lousy, so not sharing it here.

A lot of our snow has melted away because it's been above freezing the last few days and it rained yesterday. Most all the icicles have gone away. Our power has been stable too which has been very nice.

My daughter, Ruth, has gone to college. I miss her so much, and the cats definitely miss her. She's coming home this weekend though so that's okay. Our weekend plans are packing her belongings and moving them down to her new apartment via our pickup truck. Fun, fun.

Simple Woman's Daybook for January 4, 2016

Outside my window...
Snow, snow, and more snow. There is also a large quantity of birds hanging out at the Parkarosa Bird Buffet. We've got Crossbills this year. Yay!

I am thinking...
that I am glad my cold is finally getting better. Another Yay! I can actually breath through my nose today, and the coughing has decreased considerably. Now, if only the energy would come back.

I am thankful for...
My daughters, Ruth and Sarah. They bring much joy to my life. I am very proud of them. They turned out to be good, kind, responsible adults.  Ruth heads off to the University of Idaho in less than two weeks. I am both excited, and sad. I will miss her, but I'm also glad she's setting out on a new life adventure.

From the kitchen...
Blech. I do not feel like cooking anything. So I prefer not to even think about the kitchen right now, though I do hear the hum of the refrigerator coming from there.

I am wearing...
Night gown and my fuzzy purple robe. I intend to continue the resting and recovery from the cold today, so I'm being slow and lazy about getting dressed. I do have to go out later though. Rats.

I am creating...
Worked on the baby cardigan last night. Got the body done. Sleeve next!

I am going...
To the post office and the drug store today. I sold a doll outfit on Etsy over the weekend. Hurray! (Warrents more than just a Yay) I am also picking up a prescription for Sweet Hubby.

I am reading...
Until Proven Guilty by J.A. Jance. It's a murder mystery. A little girl is found murdered and Detective J.P. Beaumont is trying to find out who did it. It's one of my Nook books. I think I've read it before though. It's sounding somewhat familiar, though I can't remember who the criminal is.

I am hearing...
The washing machine on spin cycle. Also the tv is on. An episode of CSI:Crime Scene is on. I'm not really watching it. Just have it on for background noise.

Around the house...
Just a few Christmas decorations left to put away. I was working on it yesterday and ran out of energy before I got done. I'll finish up today. Probably won't take more than 20 minutes.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
I've got a Knitwits meeting this week. Looking forward to it. I also hope to get out some beads. I haven't done any beading in ages. I've got some projects I want to do.

I also plan to work on photographing some new doll outfits for the Etsy shop. I'm anxious to try out my tripod and lighting kit that I got for Christmas.

Here is a picture for thought I am sharing...
This is my daughter Sarah with a Hibiscus flower she grew. It's an old picture, but I ran across it the other day while cleaning out some files on the 'puter. I love this picture.

WIPs for the New Year

This is my first WIP post for 2016. I haven't been knitting a lot lately. I've been rather sick since Christmas. The demon cold got substantially worse this past week. I've just about coughed myself inside out. So I've been doing a lot of laying around and sleeping. If things don't start to improve by Monday, I'm hauling myself to the doctor.

These first two FO's are what I knitted on the cruise. It's a couple of doll tops. Not much, but then, I didn't have a whole lot of time to knit either.

This project I started New Years Eve. I worked on this and watched season 5 of Downton Abbey, in preparation for the start of season 6 next week. It also helped me stay awake until midnight so I could toast in the New Year with a cup of Nyquil.

It's another layette set for Knitwits. It will go with this fleece for the blanket.

I do not have enough of the lime yarn for both the blanket and outfit, nor was there a label on the skein, so I don't know what kind it is. Not sure what I'm going to do about that. Maybe I will find more of it at the next meeting, or I'll use a different color for the blanket edging. I have enough fabric for two blankets. I hope to snag some yellow for the second set.

We are still up to our thighs in snow, though it hasn't snowed much since my last posting. It's been very cold. The high today, so far, has been 14F. I felt well enough that I dug out the hot tub so I could check the water and do the regular weekly maintenance. Didn't do it last week, nor have I even opened the lid, so was expecting some really skanky water. To my surprise, it's just fine. Water was as clear and clean as it could be. Temperature was good. Everything is working perfectly even though the power has been out half a dozen times this past week. So, I went and got my swimsuit on and got in it. It looked so inviting. Felt so good too. Here's the view I had.

It's a bit steamy. That's a glass of ice tea. Don't want to get dehydrated.

We've got lots and lots of icicles on the house. This is the back side (from the hot tub).

I should take a pic of the front side. I thought I had with my phone, but it's not there. We have a double row of icicles there. One row hanging on the roof edge, and the other row is hanging on the Christmas lights.

Here's another odd photo I took the other night.

This is icicles hanging on the Christmas lights outside the living room window. I said it was odd.
